Purchased a 2018 Subaru Forester from SMP late December 2024 that was sold as a Certified Pre-Owned unit. A week or two after the included warranty expired we discovered that the AC didn't work (compressor wouldn't engage). Raised with SMP and the best that was offered was 2.5 hours diagnostic at ~$190/hour plus a recharge to even begin to understand what the issue was. I understand that it was just out of the warranty period but thought/hoped there might be a little good will there to help out a bit given the timing. I was mistaken. Based on that we opted to take it to where we normally deal. So far the sun sensor, condenser and compressor have had to be replaced to get the AC operational again at a cost of >$2300. Given the number of components requiring replacement, we suspect that it didn't work at the time of purchase (and have a hunch that it may have been originally traded due to this issue, though I suppose that can only be considered as speculative.). Out of curiosity I more closely reviewed the inspection sheets that we were given at the time of purchase. As far as I can tell the actual operation of the AC system (and heat for that matter) isn't actually checked/measured. There are boxes for the HVAC and fan controls, but nothing that indicates that system performance checks around temperature are conducted/measured or that critical components (i.e. the compressor) engage. The biggest lesson in all of this was mistakenly thinking that the Certified Pre-Owned designation gave a higher level of confidence. Some things were done (I think that about $2500 or so was put into the vehicle before we bought it for adding a block heater, replacing brakes, etc.), but yet other potentially costly things go unchecked/unverified. The lesson in this is to not fully trust the inspection at the dealership and take even Certified Pre-Owned units for an independent pre-purchase inspection at a trusted independent shop.
